Cabot CAB-O-SIL® LM-150 Fumed Silica
Categories: Other Engineering Material

Material Notes: CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica is a low surface area fumed silica that imparts a moderate increase in viscosity and reinforcement in liquid and polymer systems. All untreated fumed silicas are characterized by:
  • high purity
  • aggregated structure
  • submicron particle size
  • low bulk density
  • hydrophilic surface chemistry
Application Information: CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica is used primarily for thixotropy in silicone sealants and for reinforcement in silicone rubbers.
Silicone Sealants: The primary application for CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica is in RTV-1 and RTV-2 silicone sealants. Among Cabot’s untreated fumed silicas, CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica provides the best balance of dispersability, thixotropy and reinforcement. While fumed silicas with higher surface area than CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica can provide higher thixotropy and reinforcement, higher surface area silicas cannot always be adequately dispersed with the low shear mixing equipment widely used in the sealant industry.
Silicone Rubbers: CAB-O-SIL LM-150 fumed silica can be used for reinforcement of silicone rubbers. It imparts moderate increase in hardness, tensile and elongation, but is the most easily dispersed of Cabot’s untreated fumed silica. Because of the hydrophilic surface of untreated fumed silicas, further modification of the silica surface, for example, during preparation of the silicone formulation, is necessary to prevent crepe hardening.
