Chromium triiodide is a rare layered transition metal trichalcogenide (TMTCs) ferromagnetic semiconductor. Unlike chromium trichloride, which exhibits 2D-Heisenberg magnetic behavior, CrI3 exhibits stronger magnetic anisotropy, promoting 3D magnetic properties, with a larger van der Waals gap and thus a smaller splitting energy. Applications: 2D CrI3 is a promising candidate for van der Waals bonded ferromagnetic devices because its ferromagnetism can be preserved when the bulk crystal is exfoliated to its monolayer.
