Versalis Extir® P 1212 Expandable Polystyrene  (discontinued **)
Categories: Polymer; Thermoplastic; Polystyrene (PS)

Material Notes: Extir P 1212 is an expandable polystyrene in the form of spherical beads of very fine particle size and narrow distribution, containing pentane as blowing agent. Extir does not contain CFC or HCFC. Extir P 1212 is used for the very fast moulding cycle production of shape mouldings with very thin sections and complex shapes. It is characterised by good fusion, excellent processability, low energy needs combined with a good dimensional stability and an excellent surface finishing.

Applications: Extir P 1212 is a fast cycling grade used for production of very thin section, complex shaped mouldings requiring an excellent surface finishing and accurate reproduction of mould detail (e.g. script or logos). The most typical applications are: • complex , multi-hole seed trays • technical industrial and protection packaging • boxes for printed circuit boards • medical kits

It is recommended to keep the product in a dry well ventilated store between 15-20°C. For product packaged in octabins the guaranteed shelf-life is one month; product in steel drums has a six months guaranteed shelf-life. During the processing of Expandable Polystyrene any sparkle or flame must be avoided and smoking should be forbidden. An adequate electrical grounding of machinery and of pneumatic transport lines is recommended. For further information concerning storage, packaging and processing precautions please refer to "Styrenics - Technical data sheets" and to the "Extir Safety Data Sheet". This grade complies by composition with the requirements set by the main regulations for plastics intended for food contact (including the EEC directive 90/128).

Processing: Extir P 1212 can be easily pre-expanded over a wide density range from 21 to 60 kg/m³. The recommended ageing time before moulding obviously depends on the preexpanded density and ranges from 6 to 24 hours. Extir P 1212 is also characterised by an ease of mould filling especially with complex shapes. The low energy needs of Extir P 1212 mean that it can be moulded with fast cycles (mainly by decreasing the water and vacuum cooling times). It can be moulded on all types of shape moulding machines including “dry”, (without direct steam contact), moulding machines.
